PlantWave, the plant music device created by multimedia artist Joe Patitucci, will formally launch its ongoing support of EarthPercent at SXSW 2026.

PlantWave commits 1% of its global revenues to nature protection and restoration projects via EarthPercent, the music industry's nature and climate foundation co-founded by Brian Eno.

The move signals a growing shift in how music technology can integrate ecological responsibility. For PlantWave and the broader plant music movement, music made from living plants will now directly support living ecosystems.

PlantWave uses bio-sonification technology to translate plants’ subtle electrical fluctuations into real-time ambient music, allowing individuals to listen to plant-generated compositions at home. Designed for personal listening, the device enables users to place sensors on houseplants and hear their ferns, pothos, or fiddle leaf figs generate continuous, evolving sound.

Under this commitment, every PlantWave purchase contributes directly to environmental preservation, ensuring that plant-generated music also supports the ecosystems from which plant life originates.

"For over a decade, I've been exploring what happens when we treat Earth as a creative collaborator rather than a resource," said Joe Patitucci. "With this commitment, listening to plants becomes more than just a passive act. It becomes a way to support the ecosystems that sustain us."

The support will be activated at a live SXSW 2026 showcase at Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, where Patitucci will collaborate with vocalist Nicole Miglis (BATRY POWR / Hundred Waters) and feature a performance by Bryan Noll (Lightbath). Together they will present a plant-powered concert using real-time plant bio-sonification, demonstrating how music made from plants can function as both artistic expression and ecological participation.

Founded by musician Brian Eno, EarthPercent mobilizes the global music industry to address the climate and biodiversity crisis by directing funding toward high-impact environmental organizations. Through its 'Protecting Nature' action area, funds support Indigenous-led ecosystem preservation — communities widely recognized as among the most effective stewards of biodiversity worldwide.

By integrating this support directly into its business model, PlantWave ensures that listening to plant music at home becomes an act of ecological reciprocity.

In an era dominated by artificial intelligence, generative algorithms, and synthetic sound systems, PlantWave offers something fundamentally different: real-time music made from living plants — now paired with measurable environmental impact.
